Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you don't like the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. With a little patience, you can install a new handle in no time.

Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates which hide the screws to give them a more attractive appearance. However, you'll have to attach them separately if your new handle doesn't already have them.

Remove the old handle

The door handle is not just a decorative feature for your home It's also an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock your door. As time passes the door handle could start to lose its grip or feel loose. It could be beginning to appear aged and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time for a replacement.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is an issue because it means that you can not lock or unlock your door which could be a security risk for you and your family.

Another reason to replace the door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A broken door handle can be quite dangerous, especially when your children or elderly family members are unable to open it and could get trapped within. Luckily, it's quite easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the handle that was broken.

The majority of modern door handles are standard size and so they are suitable for any door. If you're not sure whether your new door handle will fit, try removing the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will allow you to purchase the correct size door handle.

The most straightforward method to take off the handle from your door is to take it off of the door itself. This is usually done using the screw driver. However, some door handles have the cover plate which hides the mounting screws so you'll have to cut off this to access the screws beneath. Once you've removed your old handle, make a note of how the spindle is positioned so that you can be sure to align it when you install your new one.

You can also remove the door handle by depressing the latch mechanism. This is usually done using a screwdriver but you'll need to locate the small latch, which should be on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, you'll need to take the handle off the strike plate, and then the latch from the door edge.

Take off the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace the latch plate when replacing the handle. This is the plate that is the one that holds the hole in which the latch of the door hooks when the door is closed. The package the new handles arrive in will include two different latch plates: either a rectangular or circular (see the diagram above for the parts of the door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, replace it with an oval one. This will let the latch hook onto the strike plate, making the handle easier.

The first step is to loosen the screw that is holding the old latch plate in place. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you can, it might be beneficial to have another person help with this process.

Once the screws are removed and the latch plate should pull out of the door with ease. If it's stuck or won't move, use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Install the latch plate in the doorjamb using the wood screws that came with your new handles. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're unsure if the latch plate is in the correct position You can try closing and then opening the door to check whether it locks and closes correctly. If not then you'll have to adjust the strike plate up or down, or even forward or back until the door closes and latches correctly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you might have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't narrow, the wrong size latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the exact procedure to adjust the strike plate, but with the use of a metal file instead an hammer and chisel.

Remove  upvc door handle  is the angled piece of metal that slides through the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to a hole in the door frame to keep the door closed. If your door is wobbling when you close, replacing the latch could be the only thing needed to fix the issue.

The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to see, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to take off the latch as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.

If the latch doesn't easily be released it is suggested to use an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the recessed latch slot and gently move it around until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. You may need repeat this process a few times before you can pull the latch out.

It should be possible to slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure the latch is positioned correctly in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.

Before you install the new handle, be sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Check that the latch size of the new handle matches the measurement.

If you're replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll need a new one. If you are not changing locks, a new lock should fit into your existing recess, and will work with the keys you have already. Be sure to choose the latch with rectangular cover plates that match the handles you have.

Some doors don't have this gap. If yours isn't, you will need to drill a new hole into the door. The process for doing this is the same procedure opening a door using locks, but you'll be taking extra care to avoid damaging the frame or door.
